✧ Marcel Proust masterfully explores the awakening of memory. The passage, famously known as “the little madeleine”, appears in the first part of Swann’s Way and has become – in literature and beyond – a true symbol of memory itself. In this scene, Proust describes the nature of involuntary memory, recounting how the simple act of tasting a madeleine soaked in tea, offered by his mother, unexpectedly unlocks a vivid childhood memory long buried in his unconscious. A magical moment from the past returns to life in the present – brought back by the senses of taste and smell.
